First of all, if you haven’t filed your income tax returns for the financial year 2016-2017 then you must file it immediately. Even though the last day has passed you can still file your returns. Just that you would be paying some additional amount as penalty and interest to IT department.
Income tax filing is an every year ritual which all Indian citizens must do if they fall under income tax slabs. But this year it is little different. Because income tax department has mandated the linking of Aadhaar number with your PAN to process the ITR.
The interesting point is, a few days back Supreme Court of India made a land mark verdict on the Right to Privacy of citizens in India. From that time, there have been many discussions about the conflict of already existing laws.
Having said that, it is mandatory to link your Aadhaar number with PAN on or before 31 st August. Many officials are also quoting that, income tax department has made an amendment in IT act to ensure everyone is complying with PAN – Aadhaar linking. This will not be impacted by apex court’s order. It is never too late to link your Aadhaar and PAN, you can do the same by visiting here. The linking will be successful even if there is a partial mismatch with your name on PAN and Aadhaar.
Due to server glitches and other reasons, IT department had announced an extension on July 31 st by 5 days for filing income tax returns. So, don’t be under the impression that income tax department will extend the date for Aadhaar-PAN linking too. Because, this time they have made it very clear that there will be no extension on final date.
