Goods and Services Tax was implemented by the Government of India on July 1 st of 2017. It was greatly welcomed by everyone across the nation. The main aim was to help the people from paying multiple taxes for the same product at different stages of a business. The government has also developed a centralized GST portal to facilitate the ease of filing returns and paying taxes.
For each month 3 returns have to be filed by the GST users – GSTR1, GSTR2A and GSTR3B. Out of which the Government has given relaxation in return filing dates of GSTR1 and GSTR2A for the month of July and September. They have kept the last date for July month filing of GSTR3B as 20th of August 2017. But this day fell on Sunday which forced the GST users to pay taxes and file their returns by Saturday itself. When entire nation tried accessing the portal on 19th of August, the servers crashed and systems went down similar to that of Income Tax Website on 31 st of July. No one was able to successfully file returns or pay taxes that day. Many users took it to Twitter by posting the screenshots of GST portal access issues and not being able to comply with payment deadline as next day was a holiday day for banks. Few CA firms and GST users have also requested for date extension to file GSTR3B.
Later in the day, GST Council made an official announcement stating that they are extending the return filing date by 5 days which is 25th of August 2017.

For TRAN-1 cases, the last date for payment is 25th August and no change in return filing date i.e. 28th August.
For non-TRAN- 1 cases, the last date for payment and filing return is 25th August.
Unfortunately, this day falls on Ganesh Chaturthi which is also a national holiday. The GST users are left with no choice other than filing their GSTR3B returns before the day ends to avoid any late fees or interest on non-payment.
Below are the dates to keep in mind for the July month GST returns,
GSTR-3B for July 2017 – last date August 25th
GSTR-1 for July 2017 – last date September 5th
GSTR-2 for July 2017 – last date September 10th
